Montevideo is one of the youngest capitals of Latin America. It was founded between 1724 and 1730 by the governor of Buenos Aires, Don Bruno Mauricio de Zabala due to a strategic reason of the Spanish Crown that led to the foundation of the city San Felipe y Santiago de Montevideo. It was populated by people from the Canary Islands who then joined other families from Buenos Aires.
Montevideo brings together a high proportion of the economic activity, trade and services, banking, and tourism in the country. It is considered the best strategic natural seaport in South America.
More than 150,000 trees from different species and some dating hundred of years can be found along our streets and avenues. It is a real treat when visiting Montevideo.
